The Grand Canyon
While you are vacationing in Arizona, you should take the opportunity to pay a visit to the Grand Canyon. This impressive landscape can be found in the North Western part of Arizona and is, just like the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.The Grand Canyon covers an area which is 277 miles long and varies in width from 4 to 18 miles. It has depths which are over a mile and is considered to be a semi-arid area.
Over a period of six million years, the Colorado River has been flowing through this landscape, eating away at the rocky bottom and walls over and through which it flowed, creating this majesty scenery.Native Americans have inhabited the canyons long before the first European immigrants in 1540 even laid eyes on this wonder of nature.
The Grand Canyon was declared a National Park by President Woodrow Wilson on February 26, 1919 by an Act of Congress.It is one of the most studied geologic landscapes in the world and attracts momentarily about 5 million visitors per year.
