Phoenix, Arizona - Cautions
A few animals you need to be aware of and avoid, if possible, in this area include rattlesnakes and scorpions. These creatures are fairly common in any open desert area and usually hide out under and between rocks.Snakes are much more active during the summer due to the heat. That also includes the night time. Make sure to shine a bright light before reaching out in the dark!
Should you be camping out, be sure to be careful picking up things off the ground. Check everything well ensuring no critters, especially scorpions, are hiding in or under it. It can save your life.
Another one to watch out for is the Gila Monster. This large colorful poisonous lizard has a lethal bite as well and can be found in the desert areas in and around Phoenix. Even though he looks cute, be aware of this venomous dude!Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders present another danger. The last one can be recognized by a "violin-shaped" marking on the upper back. Although the bite of the brown recluse is not deadly, it can cause serious tissue death and there is no cure for it.
There are several plants in this area which are toxic either by touching or eating them. They are too many to list here, but ask a local Pharmacist or a Tourist Information Center to tell you what too watch out for.
As far as other dangers go; nothing different from what to expect in any other big city.
