Grand Canyon - Cautions
As far as dangerous animals go, you can expect to find the same ones as I mentioned before in my post: Phoenix, Arizona - Cautions. You may want to read up on it.There are several more dangers you can expose yourself to and you better look before you leap; be aware and prepared of what you may be up against before exploring the Grand Canyon.
Hikers need to be aware of the fact that the temperature at the bottom of the rim is a lot higher then on top. It may be close or over the 101 Fahrenheit (over 38 Celsius). Many have fallen victim to heat stroke, cardiac arrest, dehydration, and hypothermia and had to be rescued. You can prepare by reading up on hiking tips, updates on the condition of the trails and backcountry and even enlighten yourself by watching videos and listening to Podcasts on hiking tips in the Grand Canyon.
Some more hiking tips:
- Use the cooler hours of the day to do your hiking.
- Take it easy; you don't have to catch a train. You know you are at the right pace when you can carry on a conversation and are not out of breath.
- Take a break for about 10 minutes every hour. Sit down in the shade and prop up your legs.
- Fuel your body often with food and water. Especially that last will keep you from getting dehydrated.
- Soak down your hat and shirt at every source of water you pass; it will help against overheating.
Be careful when rafting. The best way is to take advantage of the guided rafting which are offered. Even if you are an experienced rafter, make good inquiries before you go, so you know what you are up against. Several people have drowned already and it is best to keep your head above water.
Keep in mind that you may be caught by surprise by flash floods, falling rocks and take cover during thunderstorms; all these things can happen and have claimed many victims as well.
The breath taking views of the Grand Canyon are very inviting to take pictures, which is fine of course. Watch your step though and do not taunt fate.
A shot like this<---- is not worth the risk and certainly not worth dying for; you don't want to be the next one who is added to the list of photographers who did!
The Grand Canyon has its own pit falls, so be careful!
