Town Arrests Tourists as Promotion
This sure was an eyebrow raiser and my first reaction was to stay clear from Kalona, Iowa. Things are not always what they seem though and since my curiosity was sparked, I had to know what this was all about. Low and behold, it was the total opposite of what I expected.
The city sure laid a heavy trip on these ignorant travelers. After the initial shock of being pulled over and placed under arrest, these 'jail birds' however were treated like royalty and given an all expenses paid visit to the town.
The tourists may not have expected nor opted for having to go sight seeing with an arrested-tourist-badge attached to them and a police escort. It was very temporary though and I can imagine it was a pleasant experience as well. After having done their time they were sent their merry way and could trip along.
I can see how this is a good promotion for a town to attract more visitors. It may even set the trend for other places to follow. You may want to take a drive to another town or city, hope to get arrested and be treated to a great day out; what a trip!
It almost sounds like a sweepstake. It is actually: the police stakes out and sweeps up any car with an out of state license plate. I have to admit that it is very unique and one would almost hope being placed under arrest.
I don't think I would want to bail out!
