Things To Keep In Mind

Some things can be very different, especially when you would be visiting Europe. They may be small things, but oh boy, they really can mess up everything!

Take the date for instance; in the States the first number is the month and the next one is the day. In Europe it's exactly the other way around: Day, Month, Year. So, today would be 14-11-09 instead of 11/14/09. It is written the other way around there and you better keep that in mind when making appointments!

Another thing is numbers. Example: 47 here is pronounced forty-seven (which makes good sense), but in a lot of European countries the last number is said first: seven and forty. Listen carefully, it can save you some misconceptions, due to the transposition of numbers.

Last, but not least; writing down an amount of money. This could really be a killer if you are not careful! If something would cost 2 dollars and 95 cents, it's written in the US as following: $ 2.95, while in Europe it would be written like this: € 2,95. I hope you get the point, or the comma in this case. The difference in the use of the comma and the period. As soon as the amount hits the thousand mark, it's exactly the other way around $ 1,000.95 here and € 1.000,95 in Europe. Keep that in mind, it can save you lots of grief!

Cultural differences may seem confusing at times, but I hope this was helpful. Well, so much for the tip of the day. Don't worry; I made sure I wrote the amount down correctly. Grin.
