Appetizing Cultural Differences
One of the main differences you will encounter when visiting another country is eating habits. Food is prepared differently, unknown dishes will be on the menu and you will be confronted with customs which appear strange, but are part of the people's daily lifestyle in that particular country or area even.
The Netherlands are no exception; the meals and delicacies differ in many ways. Take breakfast for instance; a continental breakfast is not custom. Cereal or a sandwich is. Keep in mind that by a sandwich I mean one slice of bread, slightly buttered and topped off with sandwich meat, cheese, preserves, peanut butter or other toppings specifically made for that purpose. Let me assure you, those are plentiful!
Lunch usually is a bun or a sandwich like described above, but it can be expanded with something warm like soup, boiled, scrambled or fried eggs for instance. Supper usually means a home cooked meal; pan fried meat, boiled potatoes and vegetables. Yes, desserts are very common and can vary from ice cream to different flavors of yogurts, all kinds of other liquid treats and fruit.
No, no pies for dessert; those are served with a cup of coffee or tea to company in between meals. Don't expect the combination of cake and ice cream at a Birthday; that is unheard off. Just cake is custom. Do expect snacks like chips and dip, crackers with cheese, meat, fish, salads like egg-, fruit-, tuna-, chicken salad etc. Those are mostly served later, after the coffee and cake.
These are just a few differences you will encounter. There are several more and I hope this made you hungry for more.
