Mind The Steel Horses

It is very common in Europe and the Asian countries to own a bike. Whether you are young or old, rich or poor, practically everyone rides it.
Bikes are often referred to as "steel horses". The majority of the population uses it daily and the picture on the left is a moderate illustration of what you would see near railway-stations, schools and shopping malls.
With all these people using and needing a bike, the theft-rate is high and many came to the conclusion that the older and more worn-out your bike looks, the less the likelihood it will get stolen.
If you insist on riding a reasonable looking or new bike, then you need more then just the lock on the bike to chain it up. That may ensure you will find it where you left it when you come back; these horses are very much wanted by the cattle-thieves. It may be good to inquire about theft policies before hiring one. It could save you lots of problems and money.
You also may want to consider taking a bike when going sight seeing. It often gets you quicker to your destination then when you would go by car. It is cheaper too, considering the gas-prices and due to the slower speed, you can take in more of the environment.
A word of caution though: when you drive a car and get in an accident with a biker, you are most likely to be held liable; even if it was not your fault. Most countries have traffic laws in favor of the bicycle riders, so it may be wise to read up on it as well before hiring a car.
Better safe then sorry!
