Mount Hood
Mount Hood is located about 50 miles east-southeast of Portland in Northern Oregon and is part of what is called The Cascade Range or Cascades. The mountain is around 11,240 feet high and part of the Mount Hood National Forest. The Cascades is a range of large mountains stretching from western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. Lakes, streams, waterfalls, rain forests, glaciers and rocky ridges are served up here by nature.
Some of these mountains are volcanic and some are not. Mount Hood is a volcanic one and although it has been dormant for quite a while now, the anticipation of eruptions at some point is still present.
Mount Hood got its name from Samuel Hood, an admiral of the Royal Navy. The mountain is covered in snow all year around and presents a challenge for climbers and hikers. With this challenge also come many risks and several deaths have occurred, mainly due to avalanches and hypothermia.
If you have plans in this direction then make sure to dress warm, let people know where you are going and be extremely cautious. Better safe then sorry!
