Winter Storm Causes Holiday Travel Nightmare

I can only imagine how awful it must be to be caught in a snow storm. Even if it is not considered to be a blizzard, it can cause major problems.

What can you do to keep from getting cold feet or worse, when you get stranded during your travel? I found some great tips which are very helpful and can even save your life:

On the road:
Don't go out if you don't have to! When you do then keep the following tips in mind:
- Find a hotel as soon as possible and sit it out.
- Under no circumstances leave the car and start walking. You will be found much easier when you stay in it and you will at least have some shelter and protection from the freezing cold.
- When you know a snow storm is possible then bring plenty of warm clothes and packaged snack foods and bottled water and enough medication when you are on prescription drugs. A flashlight and plenty of batteries may come in handy as well as some books to pass the time.

Don't keep your engine running all the time; you may run out of gas in the middle of the storm and snow can clog up the exhaust pipe which can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Best is to run the engine for just a short period of time, long enough to keep the car warm and then turn it off. A small oil heater could be a good alternative to keep in your car along with plenty of fuel of course. Be careful when using it though!

Another thing to keep in mind is to have all your cell phones with you and fully charged. They are your only lifeline to the outside world!

I hope these tips help and don't leave you entirely out in the cold!
