Appetizing Cultural Differences II
When visiting the Netherlands, I would advice you taking the time to step in to a bakery and/or pastry shop. You will be baffled by all the different kinds of bread and the abundant choice in pastries. Don't hesitate to buy some, you will love it!
Sweets, pastries and other foods which contain sugar will taste a lot sweeter then they do in the States. This is due to the fact that they are made with sugar derived from sugar beet instead of cane. Butter is usually unsalted which I personally prefer, because it brings out the flavors of the other foods better.
Another place to eat would be a 'snack bar'. French fries and all kinds of other deep fried foods can be purchased here and are definitely worth trying. Most of the time it is take-out and no, it is not very healthy, but very tasty.
Take-out food from the leading fast food restaurants did not used to be very common; it was more like a treat, but that could have changed over the years. Most of the times, Chinese, pizza and the snack bar make up for the meal when Mom does not feel like cooking.
The choice in restaurants is huge as well; home cooked, French, Italian, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and Japanese, to name a few. Should you want to try a typical Dutch snack in between, then I advise trying some of the different flavors of licorice which you can buy in any grocery store. I have no doubt you will find one that makes your mouth water!
