Appetizing Cultural Differences III
There are some Dutch delicacies you should not pass up. One of them are the so called "Poffertjes". These are very small pancakes, served with real butter and lots of confectioned sugar. You can find many stands, especially in Amsterdam and on fairs, which sell these little treats. Be warned though, once you got a taste of them you may not want to settle for only one portion.
Even though the Netherlands are considered to be a fisherman's country fish is rather expensive. Too bad, because another delicacy is smoked eel which is delicious. You can try smoked mackerel instead; the taste comes close to that of smoked eel, but it is a lot cheaper.
Typically Dutch is 'Maatjesharing' or also called 'Hollandse Nieuwe'. This is raw Herring which is served and eaten with raw onions. I agree; it is the same as eating Sushi and you do have to develop a taste for it.
Almost every province has its own specialty and/or delicacy. I don't expect you to like them all, but you will never know until you try.
I have one more thing to dish up which could prevent a precarious situation. Should you have the pleasure of sitting down at a meal with a Dutch family then keep in mind not to get up and leave the table until the meal is over; that is considered to be very rude.
I hope all this was helpful. It sure was served up with a smile. :-)
