The Netherlands - Cautions

Every country has their own dangers as far as animals and plants go and the Netherlands are no exception. Even though there are not that many, you still have to be careful.

Native poisonous animals as far as I know, are the toad and the Adder, also known as the European Viper. This venomous snake can grow up to 2 feet long and even though they are around, I have never come across one. You are more likely to run in to a toad then an adder.

There are poisonous plants galore though. One of them which grows in the wild and can be found almost everywhere is the Berenklauw (Bear's Claw or Hogweed).

Both species, the common as well as the giant Hogweed, have slowly become part of Dutch nature. The Giant Hogweed is very toxic and just as much as brushing against it can cause severe burns.

The common Hogweed can cause the same symptoms, although those are not as extreme and severe as its relative. Since it is hard to tell which is which, it is best to keep your distance.

There are many other poisonous plants, but those are mainly cultivated plants for homes and gardens and the owners and/or retailers can tell you whether it is toxic or not.

When walking through wooded areas, you are likely to see many different mushrooms which number will increase during fall. It is best to leave them be. No matter how pretty they are; admire them from a distance because many are toxic.

Well, that's all I can think of for now to share with you. I hope all this information was helpful in case you are considering going Dutch. :-)
