The Netherlands: Terschelling
In one of the media sources this Dutch island, located several miles of the coast of the Dutch main land, was qualified under one of Europe's small, secret villages. How odd, there is nothing secret about this island being one of the popular vacation destinations. Yes, it is small, that much is true; about 18 miles long. The population is around 4,700 which is still pretty steep for such a small island and it can be reached by ferries which depart on a daily basis during the months March through November.
One of the main attractions is the Brandaris. This lighthouse was built in 1594 and is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in The Netherlands. The history of the island dates back to 850 AD, when the first church was built. Due to its strategic location and excess to the open sea, Terschelling prospered, but also became the scene of many battles mainly with the English.
After relocation of the harbor to another part of the country, the population of Terschelling resorted to raising cattle and fishing. Slowly, but surely tourism became an important source of income and one can find hotels, camping grounds, chalets and vacation rentals galore.
There are many activities like horseback riding, bicycling, museums to visit, shops, restaurants and quiet beaches. Local events take place during the summer and it might be good to inquire at the Tourist Information what all is happening and when.
It is absolutely a beautiful Dutch island to spend some time at. So, if you get a chance; don't miss the boat or ferry in this case!
