SnowCastle of Kemi, Finland
With summer in full swing, the heat might get to you and you may be longing for a cool place. Well, here is one for you: the SnowCastle of Kemi, Finland.
The first SnowCastle was built in 1996 and drew 300,000 visitors. Due to this success the castle, which is the biggest in the world, has been rebuilt every winter season. That is why the architecture and the inside differ each year, but it always has a chapel, a restaurant and ... a hotel!
The ecumenical SnowChapel offers 50 to 100 seats and lends itself very well for a unique wedding. Many have already taken advantage of this opportunity; numerous weddings of couples from as far away as Japan and Hong Kong have already taken place here.
The SnowRestaurant is an experience in itself; it is adorned with ice sculptures and the tables and seats are entirely made of ice. No, you won't freeze your behind off because the seats are covered with reindeer fur and it serves hot drinks as well as cold drinks, lunch, snacks, and á la carte.
The SnowHotel has double rooms and a honeymoon suite available. Local artists use local materials to decorate the rooms. That creates a nice, warm atmosphere which might be needed since the temperature in the hotel rooms is approximately - 5 º C. You will be warm and cozy though due to the Ajungilak sleeping bags and the toilets are located in the warm Reception House.
Entertainment-wise, the SnowCastle of Kemi offers something for everyone; an adventure land for children, a theatre, ice art exhibitions with lights and sound effects and performances by opera singers and dancers.
SnowCastle is situated within walking distance from other local hotels and the railway station and the distance from the airport by car is 10 minutes. It is open daily from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and can be reserved privately as well.
You are already too late to make reservations for this year; the summer season has ended the existence of the hotel. Be sure to make inquiries and reservations for next year though; it may be early, but it is better doing it now then being left out in the cold!
