Bhutan, South Asia - Useful Tips

Keep a few things in mind when planning a trip to this unique, beautiful country, so you won't run into problems before and during your stay and can fully enjoy your vacation. The first thing you need to know is that a Visa for Bhutan in South Asia is required. Therefore, start getting ready way ahead of time.

Concerning methods of payment; credit cards are accepted, but only by a handful of hotels and an even smaller number of local businesses and establishments. Cash may be hard to come by, because the available ATM machines have no connection with banks outside Bhutan and that means that as a visitor you can not use them.

The best solution is to bring enough cash with you in which case it is helpful to know that the currency of Bhutan is the Ngultrum which is also referred to as BTN or NU. The Indian Rupee is also accepted.

I can imagine you don't like walking and hiking around with a large sum of money in your pocket. Best would be to bring Travelers Checks, since there are exchange facilities around and these checks are accepted for the majority of the main currencies.

Should you be totally out of cash and would need some, then family and friends can use international money transfer services to get it to you. That is a comforting thought, although I hope you can avoid this situation entirely and come home with some great, unforgetable memories!
