Marques de Riscal Hotel, Elciego, Spain

No, this is not a pile of colored, wrinkled aluminum as it may seem at first glance, but the outside appearance of the Marques de Riscal hotel in Elciego, Spain, and is one of the top-notch, most luxurious hotels.

It is located in the south of the province of Álava, which is Basque Country, in the north of Spain and is part of the Rioja wine-producing region. Since 2006, it is also home to this state of the art hotel, designed by the world famous architect Frank Gehry.

Due to the fact that it is part of the wine region, you can expect to be surrounded by the tranquility and beauty of the many vineyards, and the enchanting, medieval villages only emphasize and add to this relaxing atmosphere.

Most of the attractions and activities are based upon the local product and the environment; visits to the vineyards and ancient wine cellars, the largest wine museum in Europe and taking a scenic route through La Rioja with a stop at gourmet restaurants are high on the menu of many tourists.

There is an opportunity to play golf at one of the 2 golf courses which you can find within 55 miles of Elciego, or go skiing at Port of Valdezcaray which takes a 75 mile trip, but a guided tour of the gorgeous countryside, with access to historic and cultural information and details, is just as pleasurable.

A little less pleasurable may be the price of the rooms in this hotel, as you are about to find out soon, but it is worth every penny!
