Hotel Playa Blanca, Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

At first glance, you wouldn't expect that this humble looking abode is an actual hotel, but it is. Hotel Playa Blanca, which is also referred to as the salt hotel, can be found in the Salar de Uyuni in Colchani, Bolivia, near the Chilean border and about 44 miles from Incahuasi.

The Salar de Uyuni is 25 times larger then the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, making it the largest salt flat in the world. Since building materials are sparse in this area, but salt is readily available, it was used to create a 15 bedroom hotel including a bar, living room, dining room, and salt water pool with picnic table.

The hotel is not only surrounded by tons of salt, but its exterior and interior are all constructed of it as well. The salty walls, floors, beds, tables, chairs, etc., create an eerie, but rustic and soothing atmosphere. The view from the rooms displays miles of white flat scenery, interrupted by huge piles of salt.

Don't expect many amenities here, since the hotel is in a rather remote area, high in the middle of the Andean mountains. It is the only building around, functioning as a great base camp for those interested in visiting the large salt mine and the nearby lakes.

It is worthy of a visit and once you return home and have to go 'back to the salt mine' then at least you are an experience richer!
