Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Maldives

Another unique experience while staying at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Hotel is a lunch or dinner at its Ithaa Undersea Restaurant.

Ithaa means mother-of-pearl in Dhivehi and the restaurant is located 16 feet below sea level. Besides the wooden floor, it is the first restaurant in the world which is entirely made out of plexi-glass, presenting a 180° view on the intriguing and gorgeous coral reef and marine life of the Maldives.

Aquarium technology was used to build this approximately 16 by 29 feet arched, transparent, structure. It consists of only one room and offers seating for 12 persons with a view on the coral reef on one side and the lagoon on the other.

First on the menu is a drink on the deck hanging over the Indian Ocean, after which a spiral staircase will lead you down to the restaurant. Here, you can make your choice from the exquisite, seasonal menu, serving contemporary Maldivian fusion cuisine.

The restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner from 11:00 am to 12:00 am. If you like to take a good look at the marine life, then it is advisable going during the day. The daylight allows for a much better clearer and wider view on the underwater ocean life then nighttime.

Recommended attire is smart and you would do smart making reservations at least up to 14 days in advance. Another smart thing to do is bringing a well-filled wallet; the cheapest lunch starts at around $120 and dinner at $220 per person.

Then again, you don't get to eat surrounded by coral and fish every day!
