Daytrip: FM 170 Or River Road, Texas.

Should you be in the western part of Texas, the Big Bend region to be precise, you really need to take the time to follow the FM 170, also called the River Road, from Lajitas to Presidio.

This two-lane, winding and scenic highway will mainly lead you through Big Bend Ranch State Park along the Rio Grande which is the international border between the US and Mexico.

Along the route, there are options for hiking, picnicking, admiring old movie sets, and you will come across several campgrounds.

You should expect to encounter sharp curves, steep grades, and sudden drop-offs beside the road, but you should also expect to be presented with views that will most certainly leave you in awe by this 50 mile drive.

You will not find any services between Lajitas and Presidio and for hiking trails, road maps, and other information you would do well to visit the Barton Warnock Environmental Education Center at the beginning of the FM 170.

Some scenery will take your breath away and prompt you to stop, get out, take in this amazing nature and shoot some pictures. Taking all that into consideration you may want to reserve more time then the couple of hours you had in mind.

A couple of days would be more in order and allow you to enjoy the drive to its fullest!
