Strange Abode In Serbia

Should you be in the vicinity of the Drina, a river in Serbia, then you shouldn't neglect paying a visit to this small house on the rock.

It is a one-room house which seemingly balances on top of a rock near Bajina Basta in Serbia, but that is deception. It is extremely stable and sturdy and has survived all nature has thrown at it for over 45 years now.

The Drina is 303 miles long and for the most part functions as the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. It is part of the Danube river watershed in the Dinaric Alps.

The house on a rock is the creation of a group of youngsters who went for a swim in the Drina in 1968. The rock presented a perfect resting place and soon they placed some boards on it.

They kept building, sending larger pieces they needed down the river and hauling them in as they floated past the 'construction site'. They used boats and kayaks to bring over other parts, equipment, and supplies.

Slowly but surely the structure grew into this small shelter in the middle of the river. It is only accessible by boat and over time has grown into a real tourist attraction.

The name 'house on a rock' is actually no longer applicable. The house is now located on Drina River Island!
